My cousin had her breasts enlarged and they tested her differently than me. I just had a regular mammogram, but she had to have an ultra sound. Then they started leaking, because she had them in too long. She finally just had them removed and had a lift. She looks great and now doesn’t have all that hassle. What a nightmare!

A small percentage of all breast cancers are found by the woman herself. Most that are found early are found on mammogram. Implants do not increase risk or cause much of a problem with imagining. They can make things difficult if a biopsy is needed as there is a risk of puncturing it.

Well, this is totally a guess based on some experience but I think that it would be difficult for many of these women to detect cancerous lumps. There are a few reasons…and reasons why it could be different for different implant situations. Some women have the implants done “under the muscle” and some choose just to have them put in on top. Also I know of 3 ways that they can be inserted…through the nipple (nipple cut out then sewn back on…ouch!), through an incision under the breast or on the side by the armpit, or through the belly button, then the implant is fished through the body and up to the breast. All 3 of these different methods would cause different scarring patterns. The implant placement could affect which tissues can be examined…it seems to me that “under the muscle” would have less problems with breast exams since lumps ontop of the muscle could still be felt. But if the implant goes over the muscle then I think it could cover up some lumps. Also theres the issue of scar tissue and patients potentially thinking a cancerous lump is just scar tissue.

I think a woman with implants would definitely have more issues as well because an implant is a foreign object in the body. We don’t even know where cancer comes from and theres no evidence to support implants causing breast cancer but I wouldn’t doubt it if we found out in 30 years that it does have something to do with it.

I have a few friends who have implants. I am totally content with my small boobs. I cannot imagine putting myself through the pain all for the sake of cosmetic beauty! No way.

If you have breast implants, you’re not at a greater risk of cancer detection. If you’re getting a mammogram, you should tell the mammogram technician that you have had a breast augmentation, and they will probably use “Eklund techniques” to get the best picture possible.

You should not need to do a special type of self-exam, but ask your plastic surgeon and your family doctor about any changes needed for a breast self-exam.

Just like all advice, check with your local doctor and don’t just rely on the internet for health answers!
