My cancer is not breast, so I cant give you the symptoms to look for, but I did have a recurrance. I was diagnosed during a routine check up.
Basically, you cant worry about how they will take it. You need to just straight up say, the cancer came back, it has spread, and this is what I am considering for treatment.
I know it is easier said than done, but thats what you have to do. You cant sit around worrying about how others will take the news, or worry about how to tell them tactfully or worry about them being upset. You have to just say it flat out.
If you dont feel you can handle a mushy gooy crying session with the family, tell them over the phone or email and make it quick. I know it sucks for the family, as it is what I did. However, it was much better for me that way.
My aunt happened out of chance to be with me. I was going to wait to tell my sig other until he got home from out of town, but couldnt. I called him immediatly, and did have a good crying session. And then I called my mom, had a 5 minute conversation, and let her handle telling everyone else.
Maybe thats heartless of me, but like I keep saying through this post, you cant worry about everyone else’s feelings right now, only yours.
My first diagnosis was in Oct of 04. In April of 2007 I went for a follow up mammogram with my surgeon’s office. She suggested that we schedule me for a routine MRI. There was nothing seen on the mammogram – she just thought the MRI would be a good idea just to take a look.
There was something on the MRI that concerned the radiologist, so they had me come back into the office in Sept for a biopsy.
The results of the biopsy were that the lump (less than 1 cm big) was again cancer.
Later that month I had a mastectomy.
So – in my case, the recurrence wasn’t detected due to any symptoms, it was just found in routine follow up care from the first diagnosis.
I called my mother right away. I was very calm. And she was calm till she got off the phone with me and told my father. Once the 2 of them relaxed a little then they called the rest of my family.
Hope that helps somewhat.
